BRUTALFEST DOOM not drama

Oh yeah the music. he he he.. DOOM DOOM DOOMY DOOM! First off each band on the BRUTALFEST bill was metal but Metal in its own way. The MassMetal way. That to me is what makes MASSMETAL so good and so much fun to be a part of. There is truly a metal band in MA for every kind of metal fan. Plus the bands that were at BRUTALFEST do not suck. No really, they don’t suck. Go to their websites, go to their shows and check em out and tell me they suck. You wont…you wanna know why? Cuz they don’t.

18 Wheels of Justice seriously causes me brain damage and neck injuries every time I see them. Their set is always absolutely relentless and this one was no different. I am sitting at a flea market this afternoon humming “off we go into battle” That song should be in a video game or in a movie. It is an aggressive war-cry masterpiece. It never gets old and it is permanently stuck in my head. They remind me of one of my favorite metal albums -Ride the lightning – Metallica but 18 Wheels are faster, better and with current musical influences.

Hollow Image was tight and better than I have ever heard them before. I love Josh’s aggression and head banging. Lauren was slamming behind her kit in a mass of black flailing hair and ripping elbows. I think Hollow tends to get grouped in with some odd bands but were an awesome fit for BRUTALFEST. Fast head banging, body shaking metal. I personally am always going to support a girl in a metal band actually playing an instrument not “singing”. Much respect to Lauren always. True Metal.

Liquid Violence was sick and fun and got the crowd screaming and got Jake on stage. I forgot my camera so I can not wait to see pix. If anyones got em let me know so I can post them here. I will give ya credit. Liquid brings the road experience perfection one rarely finds in a band. A band so tight and together they are in complete sync. They bring the energy of the entire room and crowd right up front…regardless if there are people talking in the back instead of paying attention. They demand your attention and they deserve it. True metal road-warriors. We salute you. |M|

Kultur is the type of music that I can not even describe accurately. I get so lost in their set usually I can not even remember where I am. My knees get all wobbly, my neck is throbbing, all I see is hair and lights and I fade into pure metal bliss. All I can say is if you like their music or even remotely like their cd. See them live. It is a live experience of metal that will never disappoint. I went to a show saw Kultur and for the next year I am pretty sure we went to every single Kultur show in the area. (except one which was cuz jake messed up directions … I was so pissed) They are always brutal, always thrashin, always slammin, always true MASSMETAL.

Last but not least Wretched Asylum. I have seen them in their band space and drank till I puked and had such a good time. I like them but never loved them. Since last night though I have changed. Wretched impressed me more than I have been impressed with a band in a long time. I usually do not go for theatrical, theme bands. I never liked Marilyn Manson or Alice Cooper, I do like Slipknot though. But I realized why I like Wretched Asylum when I do not like that theatrical stuff. Wretched writes good ass music. My head was banging harder than it had been all night before or after. The crowd got into them after hearing one or two and they did not relent or disappoint. I love the blood and gore and messy scariness. It adds DOOM to the show and they write some doomy doom music. A complete live metal experience. The whole crowd after their set was standing in stunned silence. We all walked away saying damn Wretched was sooo good tonight. Jake still has blood in his hair. |M|

BRUTALFEST

We would like to thank all the bands for all the kick ass raw rippin metal that has left us sore beaten, bloody and physically exhausted and with some totally unexpected cash for our trip in our pockets. Thank you Kultur, Wretched Asylum, 18 Wheels of Justice, Hollow Image and last but not least Liquid Violence. Liquid Violence came all the way from New York just for Jake. Jake has a black eye, a torn spot under his eye, bruises covering his arms and legs and he left with a huge weepy, gay smile on his face. Matt from Wretched Asylum said it best on our Kultur Crew banner “Jake you’re gay and I have a better mohawk than you” AHAHAHAAAAA so metal and so frikin funny. We’re gonna miss everyone here. All the writing on the banner was so funny and awesome. We are going to hang it over our bed in our new place or living room(if we have one)

The Kultur Crew banner is kick ass! THANK YOU SO MUCH. I think its hand painted and we think its is awesome. We both were so happy to have it, it sort of felt like a funeral. Like everyone hugging and remembering Jake. Me standing there in the background sobbing for my lost boyfriend.

Jake would like to have Liquid Violence play his funeral and his request for a song is “Life.” Also, yes I am Jacob’s girlfriend and have been and lived with him for over a year. It was funny, Tyson (from Kultur) was the only one who mentioned my name on the banner. Bob at least wrote “you guys would be missed”. But mostly it was specific to Jake. So while I am so happy and proud of “my man” gettin props. I was a little sad that it did not say Nina & Jake or “you guys”. Just an FYI I do not like the spotlight really, but damn I have been to every single one of Kultur’s shows for the past year printed up flyers passed them out, sat at my cd burner for hours and banged my head for every bands song. Not that I will stop doing it, or was asked to do it, for anyone or for anyone else besides my own enjoyment. I do not even really want thanks but I was going to metal shows before some of you were even born, def before I met Jake, so I am not just the girlfriend who hangs at the side of the stage and endures the metal. I love it too. I met him at a show that I went to by myself. I used to go all the time by myself. Now I have my “soulmate” as Bes from Liquid put it. Jake used to go by himself to shows too. It is just so funny how I am invisible sometimes. Or that no one even realizes we are together. Or those that discount my secret obsession with metal and just assume it is all the guys idea. |M|

my song to all the hatas yeah i said it hatas
One step from lashing out at you,
You wanted to get under my skin,
And call yourself friend,
I’ve got more friends like you,
What do I do?
Is there no standing by?
What it takes,
Who I am,
Where I’ve been,
ALONE!
You can’t be something you’re not,
Be yourself, by yourself,
Stay away from me,
A lesson learned in life,
Known from the dawn of time…..

RE!
SPECT!
WALK!
What did you say?!
RE!
SPECT!
WALK!
ARE YOU TALKIN’ TO ME?!
ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?!

Run your mouth when I’m not around,
It’s easy to achieve,
You try to make friends, not sympathize
Can you hear the violins playin’ your song,
Those secrets tell me your every word,
Is there no standing by?
What it takes,
Who I am,
Where I’ve been,
ALONE!
You can’t be something you’re not,
Be yourself, by yourself,
Stay away from me,
A lesson learned in life,
Known from the dawn of time…..

In closing…

Even tho I was not mentioned (except for TYSON or papa tyson as I secretly call him and the only one who knows true metal when they see it) on our going away banner everyone seriously is welcome to stay in our place once we get settled in California. Bands, vacations whatever. You just have to promise to maybe bring us some food and promise you are going to leave. But if you are a band let us know a little in advance so we can get some flyers and cd singles out so people wil come out to see you.

MASSMETAL FOREVER

We went to a flea market today to make some cash for our trip and Jake turns to the side and I notice hes got Wretched Asylums blood still in his hair. So metal.

All we can say is thanks, and somebody please keep burning cds and get this music out there. You guys and Lauren ;) need to be heard.

We will be passing out the BRUTALFEST Compilation on our trip across country to the few deserving souls who can appreciate true metal.

Late Night TV Metal Bands

I have noticed a complete lack of metal music on late night tv. The only show that even remotely showcases heavy rock and metal I think is Conan. Now Leno had Ozzy but Ozzy lives in LA and is totally corporate. I think theres a huge amount of untapped metal talent that late night seems to overlook, instead choosing booooring lame alternative bands that they are still trying to sell to us. I believe its 2007…Alternative is dead. It isnt 1991. Or they play melodramatic screamo LA rock. Lame.

Conan has played Lamb of God which is so cool. Plus he had this woman on who teaches how to scream. Her name is Melissa Cross and shes been on a ton of stuff and trained or coached a bunch of people.

Get yer scream on and watch the first video on her site with Conan its funny. Her book looks cool. Its the Zen of screaming. www.melissacross.com Also, she has worked with shadows fall and lamb of god.

“Metal music comes from the heart” watch the video and you will get it.

Kultur

Kultur
Metal Hardcore Thrash

One of my favorite local metal bands in Worcester County MA. The band is currently in the studio and I cant fucking wait for them to come out with their new shit. Last weeks show at Ralph’s Diner was killer even though I got dizzy on the ride home. I had that open car door hot spitting moment followed by a stumbling up the steps and passing out with my boots on on top of my blankets.

My neck hurt for like a week. 18 Wheels of Justice was so good too even though everyone left. WTF?!!! support your local bands dammit. 18 Wheels is one of the best Metal, Thrash talented true METAL bands around. None of that Nu metal breakdown over shit. M E T A L!!!! Well at least Kultur guys hung around. 18 wheels are so good the last two times I saw them I had cramps in my sides and was completely out ouf breath like I ran for weeks. For days after I couldnt turn my neck. I think thats the sign of a truly memorable show. |m|

Last weeks show at Ralphs: I am not usually one to list setlists but if anyone ever wants to post one here I would love to remember what I forgot.
